How to Pair New Flooring with the Other Colors in Your Home

Matching the colors of the walls to new floors is not always easy. Interior design magazines, images taken from Pinterest, fabulous houses on Instagram, in conclusion…

Choosing how to match the colors of the walls to the floor is complicated if you don’t have clear ideas right away.

To do this, several aspects need to be taken into account:

  • What is the brightness of the environment
  • The look we want to achieve? Classic? Modern? Industrial? Shabby?
  • Do we have furniture to match?

Once these aspects have been defined, we will have a starting point from which to begin.

Match colors: How?

Color is the most powerful design element in decorating the home; therefore, finding the most suitable shade for walls and floors creates a sense of harmony. Moreover, it allows us to obtain the right basis for defining the style of the house and enhancing furnishings and architectural details.

When planning or renovating a home, it is important to carefully consider colors for walls and the new flooring.

We now have more options for colors, effects, materials and flooring than ever before:

  • wood,
  • laminate,
  • marble,
  • resin,
  • ceramic,
  • porcelain stoneware,

All declined in different shades. So, it is possible to opt for an incredible number of wall-floor combinations based on the style you have chosen and, of course, on your personal taste.

Let’s take wood, for example, it can be glossy, smooth, or matte, with a very textured finish.

Choosing a certain shade of parquet for the floors of your home means giving a well-defined imprint to each room; this choice will then derive the one that will lead to choosing a specific color for the walls instead of another.

When designing a house, it’s important to have a clear vision to avoid unexpected outcomes that don’t match your expectations.

Matching walls and floors: what aspects to consider when choosing colors

Whether it’s a new home or a remodeling, it’s important to decide on a style and choose wall colors that complement the wood floor.

Starting from scratch, of course, the choice is wider.

If, on the other hand, the new flooring is already defined, it is necessary to start from the definition of walls.

If the walls are already defined, the floor will have to adapt.

When looking for the most suitable shade, in addition to personal style and taste, there are two aspects to consider:

  • the size of the room
  • the intensity of the colors.

Therefore, an evaluation based on the space, brightness, and intended use of the environment is necessary. Only in this way will it be possible to establish the right combination between walls and floor.

How to match wall color with wood floor?

When opting for a dark floor, the wall colors should give brightness to the rooms.

For the walls, the best option is to choose a light shade such as white, ivory, or beige. Dark colors should be avoided because they could make the room too dark and appear smaller.

Gray, on the other hand, is a neutral color that allows ample freedom of expression and the possibility of playing with the colors of the walls, as it goes well with both more lively shades and with classic white or black.

If a light floor and light walls characterize the surfaces, you will have a brighter house, and you can play with the furniture without risking too much.

To lighten the environment, floors with decorated motifs and different colors should be combined with neutral walls.

It is best to pick a neutral color like white, ivory, or light gray for this situation. Alternatively, pick a lighter shade of a color in the floor design.

For interiors characterized by marble floors, a precious and timeless material, the advice is to combine shades that reflect one of the colors present in its veins.

The shades for the walls that go best with this floor are soft, opaque, and refined colors, such as marble.

Many of the old houses have beautiful terracotta floors.

White walls are the optimal choice to create a more modern and less “rustic” environment.

If, on the other hand, you want to emphasize the rustic style, you can opt for warm shades, such as yellow and orange.

In the presence of a terracotta floor, the combination with exposed brick walls is also delightful and welcoming.

How to choose paint colors for your home interior

All colors are obtained by mixing the three primary colors: yellow, red, and blue. Depending on their percentage, the following shades are obtained: warm, cold, or neutral. To choose the right shade, consider the exposure to light and the atmosphere you want to create in your room. Bear in mind when choosing that warm colors make you perceive a higher temperature of 3-4 °C.

The distinction of colors between warm, cold, and neutral is not rigid: for example, a reddish purple is considered warm, while a blue-dominant purple is cold.

Now to answer how to choose paint colors for your home interior, consider the following information:

  • Warm tones: yellows, reds, and oranges, reminiscent of the sun fire and create a sense of intimacy, hospitality, and friendliness. They are recommended in rooms with little sun, for example, those facing north.
  • Cool shades: green, blue, purple, colors of the sea, sky, and nature: they relax, promote rest, and stimulate creativity. They are recommended in very bright rooms, such as those facing south.
  • Neutral shades: grays, whites, and beiges give a sense of freshness and serenity. They are recommended in environments with little lighting because they give brightness.

Finally, a piece of advice

When we analyze a small swatch of color or a brushstroke of paint on a medium, it’s hard to imagine the result once it’s passed over an entire wall.

For this reason, testing paint samples carefully before deciding which ones to use is the best way to avoid regrets!
